Hearing Aids/Audiology

Suburban Audiology LLC, a division of Suburban Ear, Nose and Throat Associates is proud to offer hearing aid services. Our expert audiologist(s) will fit you into a hearing aid that best serves your level of hearing loss and they will provide you with long-term service for all of your hearing aid needs.
Hearing Aid(s):
Hearing aids are small electronic devices worn in or behind the ear. They make some sounds louder; which allows people to hear and communicate better. There are many different types of hearing aids including: behind-the ear, in-the-ear, in-the canal, completely-in-the-canal, and receiver-in-the-canal. Your Audiologist can go over the benefits and limitations of each and choose the one best for your needs.
Studies have shown the benefits of Hearing Aids include:
- Improving the quality of life
- Improving understanding of speech and communication
- Reducing depression and loneliness
- Slowing down the atrophy of the brain (sensory deprivation); specifically related to the understanding and clarity of speech and word understanding
- Decreasing the rate of cognitive decline and/or dementia
- Decreasing chance of falling, possibly by half
- Reducing or eliminating the presence of tinnitus as the hearing aids are worn
What questions should I be asking when purchasing hearing aids:
- What is the length of time for the trial period of the hearing aid(s)?
- What is the length of time for the warranty of the hearing aid(s)?
- What make and model (style) hearing aid is best for my needs?
- What follow-up care is included in the cost of the hearing aid(s)?
- What are the different battery and Bluetooth connection options available to me?
What to expect when I first obtain a hearing aid:
The perception of sound will change and things will sound different. Hopefully, you will have an easier time communicating. You may notice more sounds than usual, including background noise. This may take some time (possibly several months) to get used to and adjust to the new normal sounds. You may need several visits with your Audiologist at the beginning for adjustments to make the sounds and hearing best for your needs.
Tinnitus:
Tinnitus is the perception of sound that does not have an external source (no physical noise present). Tinnitus is commonly described as ringing, chirping, hissing, buzzing, or roaring. It can occur in one or both ears.
Causes of Tinnitus: There are many causes of tinnitus including:
- Medication
- Aging process
- Ear problems: Wax, ear injury, or foreign objects
- Meniere’s disease
- Being exposed to loud sounds or environments
- Food/beverages including caffeine and salt 7) Health conditions including diabetes,
obesity, high blood pressure, temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and cardiovascular disease If you have tinnitus you should consult a health care provider such as your physician, otolaryngologist, or audiologist for further evaluation and management
