Inspire Sleep Therapy

Suburban ENT is proud to offer INSPIRE therapy, a new and innovative surgical treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Approximately 30 million Americans suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a disorder characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep due to an obstructed airway. The symptoms of sleep apnea include persistent daytime fatigue, morning headaches, and trouble with concentration. OSA can lead to functional impairment that is comparable to a legally intoxicated individual. Furthermore, untreated sleep apnea can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.
The first line treatment for OSA is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), a mask that is worn at night to maintain enough pressure to keep the airway open. However, many patients can not tolerate the CPAP mask. For these patients, INSPIRE may be a good option.
Inspire is an FDA approved outpatient surgery. Your surgeon will implant a device in a small pocket on your chest similar to a pacemaker that can monitor your breathing patterns while you are asleep. This device will deliver gentle stimulation to the nerve that controls the tongue, keeping your airway open while you sleep. The Inspire device is activated using a handheld remote before bedtime, and similarly deactivated in the morning when you wake up.
You may be a candidate for Inspire if:
- You have moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea.
- You are unable to use or get consistent benefits of CPAP.
- You are not significantly obese.
- You are over the age of 18.
