What is Nasal Swell Body Reduction?
Nasal congestion and obstruction are very common reasons to visit an Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist. Among many other causes, enlargement of the nasal swell body (NSB) can contribute to nasal obstruction. The NSB (1) is located on the nasal septum (3) , a structure that separates the nasal cavity into two sides. It is made of bone, cartilage, and a thick mucus membrane, and it plays a role in regulating nasal airflow and humidifying the air we breathe.
The NSB can swell due to allergies, infections, nasal irritants, or alterations in head positions. An enlarged NSB can often be associated with other conditions such as nasal turbinate hypertrophy (2) or nasal valve blockage.
NSB reduction is a minimally invasive in-office procedure that is done under local anesthesia. This procedure dramatically reduces the bulk of the nasal swell bodies, allowing for better nasal airflow and decreased nasal congestion. If necessary, NSB reduction can be done in conjunction with other procedures such as balloon sinuplasty, nasal turbinate reduction, or vivaer valve repair.
